April 21, 2014 — A study in the October 2013 issue of HortTechnology called (bear with me) “The Metabolic Costs of Gardening Tasks in Children” linked two topics in my mind that have been growing in the national consciousness: the physical health of kids in the U.S. and the increasing call for an increased STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus in education. Parents and educators are as concerned as ever that kids have access to healthy meals and ways to exercise.

April 2, 2014 — Are you watching the “March Madness” basketball games? I love it when the cameras show the parents of the players. It reminds me that these superb athletes at one point were children and it took a whole lot of work and support for them to be able to reach their full potential on the court. And part of that work undoubtedly included strength training. With so many kids active in sports at young ages in the US, how do parents decide it is the right time for their kids to start strength training?
