Reaching New Markets, Hiring Skilled Workers

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – School Zone Publishing has sold more than 300 million educational workbooks, flash cards, software, games and puzzles, while helping countless children across the globe learn to read, write, count and master other essential skills.

This West Michigan-based company founded more than 30 years ago, is making a push for continued growth in 2011, and to fill the demand for new products like downloadable educational apps for smartphones and eReaders, the company is adding to its team, currently seeking a skilled multimedia programmer with background and training in specific web design technologies.

In addition to basic needs analysis, feasibility evaluation, system architecture requirements, defect resolution and documentation review experience, the ideal candidate will be familiar with Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and the Drupal content management system. The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or a combination of two years’ programming-related experience and non-degree education.

Barbara Peacock, managing director at School Zone, recently returned from the 108th annual American International Toy Fair, in New York City. With more than 1,100 exhibiting companies and over 10,000 buyers in attendance from 85 countries, Toy Fair bills itself as largest and most influential trade show in North America for toys and youth entertainment products. Peacock said, “It was exciting to see the dynamic innovation in learning and entertainment products, and it was immensely rewarding to see how our market entries are measuring up. That’s why we’re eager to round out our technical team. We’re poised for continued growth, both in our product offerings and our web capabilities.”

School Zone’s new line of downloadable apps help children ages 3-8 master reading and math. The interactive apps allow on-the-go parents to reinforce their kids’ school skills anywhere, anytime. In spring 2010 several School Zone titles were among the first to debut with launch of the Apple iPad, and additional applications have become available for purchase on Apple’s iTunes App store, the Mac App Store, and Intel’s App Up Center. The company also recently hit the technology market with 20 early reader iBook titles for the iPad and iPhone.
