School Zone Donates Educational Resources
to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital
GRAND HAVEN (Nov. 7, 2011) — School Zone Publishing is investing in the education of hospitalized children by bringing educational resources to patients at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
Sarah Smith, a teacher and educational liaison for the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, works with young patients to keep them up-to-speed on their schoolwork. School Zone recently donated hundreds of workbooks, flash cards and readers to help out.
“We are grateful School Zone is providing us educational resources as we care for our patients and their families during their hospitalization. The initial donation has already been put to good use,” Smith said.
Jonathan Hoffman, president and CEO of School Zone Publishing, said it’s vital for his company to help patients at the nearby children’s hospital.
“It is without hesitation to give to a child in need,” Hoffman said. “School Zone looks forward to working with the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in an on-going relationship.”
“Many times a school will send curriculum to the hospital for patients to work on, but there are times when resources are needed more immediately,” Smith said. “This is where School Zone’s donation comes in handy.
“I know it is research-based curriculum that is ready for use. I have overheard parents and visitors alike, while looking over the School Zone workbooks, make comments about how ‘we have the good stuff.’”
Meanwhile, Smith said she has been reading to preschoolers with the early reader books.
“Although they may not yet be able to read on their own, the readers allow them to hear the story, and they use the rhyme scheme and images to trigger their memory, as they learn to retell the story.
“Smiles of pride appear on the young faces as they show off to their parents.”
Most importantly, Smith’s role with the hospital brings a positive distraction during difficult times for young patients.
“One of the goals of the hospital school program is to bring a glimpse of normalcy to the lives of our patients,” Smith said.
Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, a member of Spectrum Health, is a Grand Rapids-based hospital serving children throughout Michigan.
