In this Read Me document, you will find the following:

Directions for the Activities and Software:  
  1. Main Menu:
 
This CD-ROM includes two Start to Read! stories: The Big Race and Nicole Digs a Hole. From the main menu, click a tab at the top of a book to select the Read to Me or the I Can Read version of the story you would like to read. Then click the book. Click Create A Story to write and illustrate your own story. Click the Dictionary to find definitions of words used in the stories.
  
  2. Exiting This Software:
 
To exit a story, click the footprints at the bottom right of the screen. To exit the program, click the footprints on the main menu.
  
  3.The Big Race & Nicole Digs a Hole:
 
  • Read to Me
    At the main menu, select the Read to Me tab on the book that you would like to read. Then click the book. The program advances to the first page of the selected book. The words on each page are read aloud.
  • I Can Read
    At the main menu, select the I Can Read tab on the book that you would like to read. Click the arrows to move to the page that you would like to read. Click the book to go to that page. The words on the page are not read aloud automatically.
  • Reading Each Page
    To hear a sentence read aloud, click the picture of the blue ribbon or the bone to the left of the text. To change the volume, click the dog’s head or the bell at the top right. You can see animations and hear sound effects by clicking on different parts of the illustration.
  • Moving Between Pages
    There are arrows on the sides of each storybook page. Click the right arrow to go to the next page. Click the left arrow to go to the previous page.
  • Going to the Dictionary
    While reading a story, the magnifying glass will glow if the selected picture or word appears in the dictionary. Click the magnifying glass to go to that word in the dictionary.
  • Using the Dictionary
    Click a letter tab at the sides of the dictionary pages to see definitions of words that begin with that letter. Click the arrows to scroll through the entries. Click a definition to hear it read aloud. To hear an entry word read aloud, click the picture next to the word. Click the picture at the bottom right to return to the main menu or the story.
  4. Create A Story:
 
  • Moving Between Pages
    There are arrows at the bottom of each Create A Story page. Click the right arrow to go to the next page. Click the left arrow to go to the previous page. There are eight pages in Create A Story. The page number appears in the circle between the two arrows. Each page is saved automatically as you move between pages or exit Create A Story.
  • Drawing Tools
    To use a drawing tool, click one of the buttons: pencil, marker, paintbrush, chalk, pencil eraser, or chalkboard eraser. The cursor will change to show which tool is selected. Choose colors from the color palette. Click the arrow at the top of the color palette to view additional colors. The star provides "invisible ink." It will erase drawings so that the background shows through.
  • Picture Stamps
    To use a picture stamp, click the button with the flower. Click the arrows to view the selection screens. Click a stamp to use it in your story. The cursor now holds the stamp. Click to place the stamp on the drawing screen. Click on stamps in the drawing screen to move them. You can drag a stamp off the screen to delete it. To exit the selection screen with no stamp, click the footprint.
  • Backgrounds
    To select a background, click the button with the trees. Click the numbered buttons to view the selection screens. Click on a background to place it on the drawing screen. To exit the selection screen without a stamp, click the footprint.
  • Word Stamps
    To select a word stamp, click the Aa button or click a box below the illustration area. The selection screen will appear at the right side of the page. Click the arrows to view the selection screens. To hear a word or phrase read aloud, click the picture of a speaker to the left of the word or phrase. To select a word or phrase, click it. It will be read aloud and placed in the appropriate text box. To hear the entire sentence read aloud, click the picture of a speaker to the left of the sentence. To exit the selection screen, click the footprint. To exit the selection screen without inserting text, click the footprint.
  • Layers
    Each Create A Story page contains three layers. The background is on the bottom layer. Drawing tools are on the second layer. Picture stamps are on the top layer. The magic star makes any drawing tool act like an eraser. Click a drawing tool, then click the magic star. Use the cursor to erase parts of the drawing layer, allowing the background to show through. The magic star will not erase picture stamps.
  • Erasers
    To erase, click the pencil eraser. Then use the cursor to erase drawings. Click the chalkboard eraser to clear the entire page.
  • Trash Can
    Click the trash can, then click stamps, backgrounds, or words to remove them.
  • Printing Pages
    Click the printer to print the current page.
