Directions for the Activities and Software:
This software uses a variety of methods to review, teach, and reinforce beginning phonics skills. The goal is to answer all of the questions correctly during each game. Correct answers are rewarded with creative playtime in the four Play Areas. A player can exit at any time.

  1. To Start Phonics Made Easy
When the software begins, type your name and click the flashing 'OK' button. Now you are on the main activity screen. The program automatically begins with Letter Sounds. To change activities, click a different colored button along the left side of the screen. To hear the type of questions each activity area covers, hold your hand cursor over the button and listen to the audio. You can change question groups at any time by clicking a different button.
  2. Letter Sounds Activities:
Click the green button on the left side of the screen labeled “sound” to practice beginning and ending letter sounds. The program automatically plays audio instructions to explain how to solve each problem. Some activities ask you to drag a line to connect a letter with a picture having the same beginning or ending letter sound. Other activities require you to move a tile with a letter to the correct space to complete the word. To move a tile, click on it to pick it up. Then move it to the correct place and click again. Some activities ask you to identify the correct word or letter. Just click the correct answer to select it. Remember to click the purple 'OK' button when you have finished the exercise.
  3. Vowel Activities:
Click the magenta button on the left side of the screen labeled “a,e,i,o,u” to practice long and short vowel sounds. To complete some of the vowel activities you will need to identify the long or short vowel sound in a word using a color. If the color red represents the short vowel sound and the word is “cat” you need to color the “a” red. Click the red paint at the top of the screen then click again on the letter in the word that makes the short vowel sound. Other activities ask you to look at the picture, say the word, and then drag the tile with the correct vowel sound into the space to complete the word. Click on the vowel tile, move it to the correct space, then click again to set it down.
  4. Rhyming Activities:
Click the orange button on the left side of the screen labeled “cat, sat” to practice rhyming families. One type of activity asks you to sort rhyming words. Move a picture tile to the space containing another picture that rhymes. To move a picture tile, click on it to pick it up. Then move it to the correct place and click again. Other activities ask you type in a letter to make a new word within the same rhyming family. Use your keyboard to type in the correct letter. Some activities present a picture and ask you to click on one of the pictures in the lower portion of the screen that rhymes with it. If you don’t know what the picture is, just move the hand cursor over the image and listen to the audio.
  5. Letter Blend Activities:
Click the yellow button on the left side of the screen labeled “bl, sh” to practice letter blends and digraphs. Listen to the audio directions. Click the 'OK' button to check your work.
  6. Instant Feedback:
Click the purple 'OK' button to score the exercise. The program automatically tells the player if the answer was correct or incorrect. The star at the top of the channel tells how many correct answers are needed to win that section. After every 5 exercises there will be a bonus question. Answering the bonus question correctly will award bonus points to the players total score.
  7. Help:
Click the “?” button to hear how to play the activity on each screen.
  8. Ending Phonics Made Easy
To exit the program, click the purple arrow. The program automatically will save the players session. When the player uses the same login name, the program will start from the last session’s ending point. If a player has all of the stars illuminated on the colored buttons to the right of the screen, all of the game pieces have been won and the program will reshuffle and begin again the next time that player logs in.
