Directions for the Learning Activities and Software:
This software uses a variety of methods to teach, reinforce, and review beginning sight words and picture words. The goal is to answer all of the questions correctly during each activity.  After getting five problems correct, you will get to play a game.

  To Start Wonder Words:
When the software begins, type your name in the box and click on the green 'Go' button. The program automatically begins with Sight Words. To change to Picture Words, click on the 'Picture Words' button along the bottom of the screen. You can change question groups at any time during play.

  Activities:

    • Word Searches:  The goal of this activity is to find the three words hidden in the puzzle. Once you have found a word, click on each letter of the word to select it. If you click on a wrong letter, just click on it again to deselect it. When you have found all of the words in the puzzle, click on the green 'OK' button.
    • Color a Picture:  In this activity, you will be given a word. Discover a hidden picture by painting all of the puzzle pieces that have that word or picture on them. To paint a puzzle piece, just click on it. If you paint a puzzle piece that you didn’t mean to paint, just click on it again and the paint will be removed. When you are done, click on the 'OK' button.
    • Feed the Monster:  Mr. Munch is hungry! Feed Mr. Munch the words that start with the same beginning letter. To feed Mr. Munch, click on a word, drag it to Mr. Munch’s mouth, and then click again to feed him. To get a word back, just click on his belly. When you are finished, click on the 'OK' button.
    • Word Maze:  In this activity, you will be given a word to find. Once you hear the word, the goal is to find and click on that word throughout the maze. Every time you see that word, click on it. This will make a path for Turbo the Wonder Snail to follow. If you click on a word that you didn’t mean to select, click on it again to deselect it. When you are done, click the 'OK' button and watch Turbo zoom through the maze.
    • Word Shapes:  The goal of this activity is to match words with the correct shape outlines. You will hear a word. Your job is to find that word on the list and click on it. Then drag the word into the shape outline that matches the word and click to make the word stay in the outline. Do this until you have placed all of the words into the shape outlines. If you make a mistake, just click on the word again to move it. Remember to click on the 'OK' button to check your work.
    • Alphabetizing:  In this activity, you will be given three words or pictures. Your job is to place the words or pictures in alphabetical order in the numbered spaces. Place the word or picture with the beginning letter that comes first in the alphabet in space number one. Put the word or picture with the beginning letter that comes next in the alphabet in space number two. Place the last word or picture in space number three. Click on each word or picture to pick it up. Move it to the correct space and click again to place it. If you make a mistake, just click on the word or picture and move it again. If you need help, there is an alphabet chart at the top of the screen. Click on the 'OK' button when you are finished to check your work.
    • Matching Spoken Words to Pictures:  In this activity, Ace the Wonder Rabbit is going to say a word. You need to find the picture that goes with that word and click on it. Remember to click on the 'OK' button to check your work.
    • Matching Spoken Words to Words:  In this activity, Ace the Wonder Rabbit will say a word. You must find that word on the list. Be careful that you find the version of the word that is spelled correctly! When you have clicked on the word, click on the 'OK' button to check your work.
    • Matching Pictures to Words:  In this activity, you will see a picture. You need to find the word on the list that matches that picture and click on it. Then click on the 'OK' button to check your work.
    • Sorting by Beginning Letters:  The goal of this activity is to sort the pictures by their beginning letters. Click on one of the pictures and drag it into the column with the correct beginning letter at the top. Click again to drop the picture into the column. If you make a mistake, just click on the picture in the column and move it. When you have placed all of the pictures into the correct columns, click on the 'OK' button.
    • Puzzle Pieces:  In this activity, the Wonder Words friends are counting on you to help put the puzzle pieces together again. When you are done, click on the 'OK' button.
    • Color the Words:  The goal of this activity is to paint the words to match the correct pictures. Click on the paint spot next to a picture, and then move the paintbrush to the word it matches. If you get a question wrong, an encouraging movie will play and a new problem will be displayed.

Directions for the Games:
The games provide important reinforcement.  After answering five problems correctly, the sight words and/or picture words that were just practiced will be featured in the game.

To go back to sight word or picture word activities, click on the red 'EXIT' button.

  Concentration:
In this game, you need to match two cards to make a pair. For each pair, you get one point. You will be playing against Tinker the Wonder Turtle. The player with the most pairs and points wins. The scoreboard will keep track of how many points each player has. Your scoreboard is blue and Tinker’s is green. To play, click on a card to see it. Then click on another card to see if it matches. If the cards match, you get a point and get to take another turn. If the cards do not match, then it is Tinker the Wonder Turtle’s turn. As the cards are clicked on, try to remember what is on each card and where it is on the screen. This will help you on your next turn.

  Darts:
This special dartboard has words and pictures in the sections. The numbers tell how many points each section is worth. You have six carrots to shoot to see how many points you can get. To start, click on the 'AIM' button. When the moving yellow light is where you want it to be on the target, click on the button again. This will start the red light moving. When the red light is where you want it to be, click on the 'AIM' button again. The point where the yellow and red lights cross each other is where the carrot is aimed. Once you have marked the target, Ace the Wonder Rabbit will throw your carrot. Try to get as many points as you can when you play Wonder Words Darts.

  Pinball:
How many points can you get? When you are ready to play, click on the 'START' button. Hit the ball with the green paddles by pushing the green 'FLIPPERS' button or any key on the keyboard. Hitting the bumpers earns points. The longer you keep the ball in play, the more points you will get. Try not to let the ball go into the hole, or you will lose that turn. Once you lose a ball down the hole, click on the 'START' button again to get the next ball. You get three balls to play. Try to beat your score the next time you play Wonder Words Pinball.
