In this Read Me document, you will find the following:

Directions for the Activities and Software:  
  Introduction: 
  This software uses a variety of methods to review, teach, and reinforce phonics skills. Type your name, and then click OK. The Phonics Firehouse has characters behind each of the doors. A character appears when you click on a door. You can try a dot-to-dot activity by clicking the orange door. Germaine Giraffe will introduce you to the activity. The top right window opens to reveal a joke-telling Paramedic Pete. Each time you click the door, you will hear a different joke. Click the alarm to see a funny animation. Morris Moose in the fire truck will take you to the movie selections. Click the top left window to meet Feemi Flamingo and enter the art studio. Or click the purple doors to find Zachary Zebra, who will take you to play an educational game.
  Ending an Activity:
  After completing a game, movie, dot-to-dot, coloring screen or artwork, click the blue arrow to return to the outside of the Phonics Firehouse.
  Completing the Software: 
  To exit the program, click the blue arrow on the Phonics Firehouse. You will be asked if you are sure that you want to exit. Click the blue arrow again to exit.
 
Dot-to-Dots:  
  Introduction: 
  To try a dot-to-dot activity, click the orange door on the Phonics Firehouse. Germaine Giraffe will take you to the activity. To exit the dot-to-dot activity section, click the blue arrow.
  Selecting a Dot-to-Dot: 
  There are arrows at the bottom of each dot-to-dot screen. Click the right arrow to go to the next screen. Click the left arrow to go to the previous screen. There are 10 dot-to-dot screens. The activity will automatically number the dots. Click the “ABC” button to see uppercase alphabet letters next to each dot. Click the “abc” button to see lowercase alphabet letters next to each dot.
  Completing a Dot-to-Dot: 
  Click the blinking red dot to begin, and then click the dots in ABC or 123 order to complete the picture. When the picture is completed, the image will animate.
 
Movies:  
  Introduction: 
  Click the fire truck on the Phonics Firehouse to watch movies. Morris Moose will take you to the movie theater. The movie choices will change as you watch the screen. Choose from 8 different movies. To exit the movie section, click the blue arrow.
  Watching a Movie: 
  Click the picture of the movie that you would like to see. The movie will play in color and with sound. To exit the movie, click your mouse or hit any key.
 
Educational Games:  
  Introduction: 
  Click the purple doors to play an educational game. Zachary Zebra will introduce you to the game. Look at the word in the white box at the bottom of the screen and listen carefully to the directions. Then, look at the words and pictures in the open windows. When the windows close, find the correct words as quickly as you can. Use the arrow keys to move Zachary Zebra. Press any key except the arrow keys to open a window. When the window is open, press a non-arrow key again to select and spray the answer. Find the correct answers as quickly as you can. Spray five correct answers to win at the current level and move to the next. Try to beat all six levels. Watch out for surprises! To try different game content at any time, click one of the numbers under the fire bell. You can hear what each phonics game teaches by placing your cursor over the number. Press any key to start. To exit the game section, click the blue arrow.
  Beginning Sounds: 
  In Game 1, players find words with the same beginning sound.
  Ending Sounds: 
  In Game 2, players find words with the same ending sound.
  Short Vowels: 
  In Game 3, players find short vowel words.
  Long Vowels: 
  In Game 4, players find long vowel words.
  Rhyming Families: 
  In Game 5, players find rhyming words.
  Blends and Combination Sounds: 
  In Game 6, players find blends or combination sounds.
  Phonics Chart: 
  Place your cursor over a vowel, blend, or combination sound to hear it. Click the printer to print the Phonics Chart. Click the blue arrow to exit.
 
Art Studio:  
  Introduction: 
  Click the top left window to enter the Art Studio. Feemi Flamingo will introduce you to the art studio. Click the picture of the bugs to use the coloring book. Click the picture of the bird to draw and paint. To exit the Art Studio, click the blue arrow.
  Selecting a Coloring Book Screen: 
  There are arrows at the bottom of each coloring screen. Click the right arrow to go to the next screen. Click the left arrow to go to the previous screen. There are 15 coloring screens, each representing a different vowel or blend sound. The art supplies are at the bottom of the screen. To paint, click the paintbrush, and then click a color. Next, click the area that you want to paint. To fill an area with a pattern, click the roller, and then click a pattern. Next, click the area that you want to fill with a pattern. Erase the last color or pattern by clicking the spiral circle. Use the soap bottle to erase all of the colors.
  Draw and Paint: 
  The art supplies are at the bottom of the screen. Click the pencil to draw a picture. To make a shape, click the stamp tool, and then click a shape. Next, click where you want the shape to appear. Press any key to rotate the shape. To paint, click the paintbrush, and then click a color. Next, click the area that you want to paint. To fill an area with a pattern, click the roller, and then click a pattern. Next, click the area that you want to fill with a pattern. Erase the last color or pattern by clicking the spiral circle. Use the soap bottle to erase all of the colors.
  Printing Screens: 
  Click the printer to print the current screen.
