Play Summary:
  1. Introduction:
Welcome to Spelling 1-2! Meet the friendly professor as he invites you to begin an exciting journey. Type your name on the banner and click 'OK'. You will join the professor on a submarine ride to the bottom of the sea where you can explore Giant Shells, a Sunken Ship, and a Deep Sea Cave.

When you visit one of these exciting places, you will find fun and educational spelling activities. The goal of each activity is to earn enough points to release the trapped fish and earn prizes to use in your Tropical Lagoon.

There are different prizes to be earned in each of the 3 areas, so be sure to win them all.

  2. Entering your personal spelling words:
If you want to add your own spelling words, click on the Scroll button. It will be blinking when you start Spelling 1-2 for the first time or if you have not added any of your own words before.

To add a word, click on an empty space on the list and type your word. Your words need to be 2 letters or longer to be accepted. When you have added all the words you would like to practice spelling, click the Exit button. If you made a mistake on a word, just click on the word and correct it. If you would like to remove all of the words from your customized list, click on the Clear All button.

Click the Print button to print your customized word list.

Before beginning each spelling game, you will need to decide if you would like to use your own customized word list or a word list chosen for you by the computer.   Click 'Yes' to use your custom words.

  3. Using the controls:
The wooden panel at the bottom of the screen has all of the navigational controls. The picture on each button helps you remember what each button does. The fish takes you to the tropical lagoon. If you've rescued any fish, this is where they'll be. Click the check mark to see your progress and to print your spelling words.

Click on the scroll to see your word list. You can also create your own word list here.

The question mark is the place to go when you need help.

Click the anchor button to exit the game.

When you are playing the game, the control panel changes into a scoreboard that shows how many words you have spelled correctly. Click on the crossing arrows if you would like to switch back to the main control panel.

When you're ready to play, click on the giant shell, sunken ship, or deep sea cave.

  4. Releasing fish and collecting prizes:
For every 5 words you get correct, you'll release a trapped fish. After every 10 correct words, you'll win a prize.

Directions for the Activities:
  1. Giant Shell:
First, you need to study the word list. You can hear each word by clicking on it. When you're ready to start the game, click on the 'Play' button. This spelling game uses word puzzles. Look at the word puzzle on the screen. Put the letters in the right order to spell the word correctly. If you need to hear the word, place the small hand cursor over the word. First, click on a letter bubble that you would like to move. Now, click on the letter you want it to switch with and the two letters will change places.  When the word is spelled correctly, the letters will turn green.

  2. Sunken Ship:
First, you need to study the word list. To hear a word, just click on it. When you're ready to start the game, click on the 'Play' button. Look at the word being spelled. When it disappears, it's your turn. Use your keyboard to place a letter in the highlighted bubble.  If you want to change any of the letters, click on the letter and type a new one. When you're ready, click on the 'GO' button.

  3. Deep Sea Cave:
First, you need to study the word list. You can hear each word by clicking on it. When you're ready to start the game, click on the 'Play' button. In this spelling game, misspelled words are mixed with the correct spelling of each word. Can you find the right answer?  Look at all of the words on the screen. Find the one that is spelled correctly and click on it.

  4. Tropical Lagoon:
Welcome to the Tropical Lagoon! This is where the fish you've released come to live. If you want to see how many fish you've released, click on the button with the check mark.

To see what prizes you have earned and use them to decorate your lagoon, click on the Treasure Chest.

If you're ready to leave, click on the anchor.

  5. Treasure Chest:
The prizes that are brightly colored are the ones you have already won. Use the right and left arrows to see more pieces. Click on each brightly colored piece to add it to your Tropical Lagoon. Just click again to put the piece down or to pick it up again.

Click on the anchor when you're ready to leave.

If none of the prizes are brightly colored, you'll need to go back to the spelling games. After every 10 correctly spelled words, you'll win a prize.
